How to Prepare for Your Engagement Photo Shoot

Congratulations on your engagement! Welcome to the most exciting and overwhelming time of your life. If you are like most newly engaged couples, you will want to share your bliss with the world in photograph form.

Planning an engagement photography session can be a fun and rewarding experience if you follow these helpful tips:

1. Choose a location

Step one is choosing a location for your engagement shoot. This is of the utmost importance because it will be the backdrop for all of your photos. Select a locale that means something to you and your fiancé. Perhaps it is the place where you met, enjoyed some of your favorite moments together, travelled together, or a spot you both just simply love for its beauty. Let a favorite setting or destination inspire the location of your engagement pictures.

2. Find a photographer

Once you have chosen a destination for your engagement pictures, you will need to find a photographer who travels and who is used to doing location shoots, especially outdoors. Time of day, lighting, and weather are all factors to consider, and you want a professional photographer who knows how to manipulate all of these aspects to produce the quality of photos you are looking for. Hillary Moore Photography has extensive experience traveling to a variety of destinations and venues. Outdoors, indoors, beaches, mountains, and different seasons…we are used to all sorts of settings for engagement and bridal portraits. Our ultimate goal is to create photographs that truly showcase your love and excitement and that you will cherish forever.

3. Pick a date

The next step in the process is to pick a date for the session. This date must work for you, your fiancé, the photographer, and the venue. Communication is key. Try to plan the session several weeks in advance so you have time to prepare and stress levels stay low. Remember, this is a once-in-a-lifetime event and should be fun and enjoyable every step of the way.

4. Plan your outfits

This may sound cheesy, but you and your fiancé should plan your wardrobe to coordinate. We don’t mean that you should match, but you should plan to wear clothing that goes together and doesn’t clash. Also try to choose an outfit that accentuates your best features individually.

5. Take care of yourself

At least a week before your scheduled shoot, make sure you are getting plenty of rest and drinking a lot of water. Avoid alcohol and tanning, as you want to make sure your skin looks it best. The camera does pick up dry skin. If you’re going to get your hair cut and/or colored, do it at least a week before your planned session as you don’t want any surprises. Obviously you want to look your best for these pictures as they will be around for years to come.

6. Enjoy!

When the scheduled day comes, relax and enjoy the occasion! You are about to marry the love of your life and these photographs of you two as a couple are a symbol to the world of your affection and commitment.

A few words from from a returning client –

“Hillary has taken many pictures of our most memorable moments. As our wedding is proceeding, we knew we wanted her to take our engagement photos. Hillary has always been so great about taking our vision and adding life to it. She always helps piece the details together perfectly and we rely and trust her opinion on what is going to look best! As we gather our outfits, she makes sure to match each outfit to each location spot and the results always exceed our expectations. We decided to do our engagement photos at our summer lake. The day was perfect; relaxing and sunny. Hillary has a way of making us feel  so comfortable during our shoot, that we forget she’s even there! I am obsessed with Hillary’s talent and so thrilled she was able to capture another monumental moment in our lives. We can’t wait to share and show off our photos! Thanks Hillary for always putting your heart, soul & time into our session and continuing to make us fall in love with each photo!”
